A New Dawn, A New Dream

A Night Scene

The night,

The backdrop

For this scene

The forest,

The stage

With shadows between

The stars,

The audience

A full crowd tonight

The breeze,

The murmur

Of soft delight

The moon,

The lighting

To guide the way

The stream,

The script

For the words we say

Ancestral Whispers

Scaling tainted climbs

Weary of mind

Remiss of time

Ancestral whispers

My thoughts,

Do find

Majestic winds

From mystical lands

Do breeze these

Voices in

And with a teary eye

I smile

Glorious Gaia

Glorious Gaia

Do you remember

When you died

Do you recall

How we inflicted

Our sweet idyllic

Affliction upon you

Do you remember

How we drowned your oceans

And clouded your skies

With our own demise

Do you remember

When you were free

And imagine how it could be

Once again

A glorious,

Pristine,

Serene dream

Easy to read with clear images and rhymes

This debut collection of short poems is easy to read, has clear imagery, and a mixture of topics. If you love poems with simple messages and rhymes, you won’t be disappointed. For me, this book gets 3 stars because while some poems show great potential, like EDGE OF WINTER and DAYBREAK, others feel incomplete, like a thought begun but not fully explored. Some poems, like GOLDEN EVENING, have a more refined style: Shadows / Reaching for the horizon / Merging with the golden haze”. I AM shows the poet’s potential with its vibrant imagery and haunting undertone: “I am the broken memories / Of midnight dreamers”. One of my favorite lines comes from AFTER THE STORM: “Lapping against the lakeside / Like a caring, / Caressing hand”. Overall, this is a solid sampling of Matthews’ work with some strong elements and unexpected notes throughout.
